Hawaii Island Festival: Kindy Sproat Falsetto & Hawaiian Storytelling Competition ~ Saturday September 14th!

Kane come out to show their skills to throw their voice in higher registers. They also share the manao of their mele, the songwriter and the hidden meaning (kaona).

This is to honor the late Uncle Kindy Sproat, a true Hawaiian who lived in Pololu Valley, as his kupuna before him. This event has served as a platform for many falsetto singers to share their talents and voices. Many have gone on to form bands and to record their own music.

Kahulanui at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kona ~ July 28th!   Leave a comment

Kahulanui at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kona ~ July 28th!

Na Hoku Award winning Kahulanui (The Big Dance) is an inspiration passed down three generations from Grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to Dad Rodgers L.L. Naipo Sr., to Grandson and Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr.

Lolena remembers stories of his Grandfather who was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band during an era when horns and drums were a part of Hawaiian music.

Throughout Hawaii in the 1920s and 1930s, one could find orchestras playing Hawaiian Swing and the house would be jumping. Kahulanui borrowed from these influences and performs classic Hawaiian songs in a syncopated style making Hawaiian Swing vibrant and alive in Hawaii today.

“Youve never heard a beat quite like this, either in Hawaii or in Harlem. Kahulanui is a ferocious blast of swinging jazz. The sun may be hot, but the music is hotter”. – The Wall Street Journal July 2, 2015

King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade ~ Saturday June 8th!   Leave a comment

King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade~ Saturday, June 8, 2019

Join us on Saturday morning, June 8, 2019, for the annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade in Historic Kailua Village.

Throughout the day, the community of West Hawai‘i will gather to honor the great ali‘i, King Kamehameha I, who established the first capital of the united Hawaiian Kingdom here in Kailua-Kona at Kamakahonu.

This year’s parade theme is Ka Mo‘i Kamehameha Nui, translated: “Kamehameha, the Sovereign Ruler of All.”

Adorned in the flowers and colors of the Hawaiian Islands, regal Pa‘u Rider Logopa‘u riders on horseback will represent each of the eight islands, led by their respective princesses and the pa‘u queen. The floral parade will also feature hula halau, equestrian units, marching bands, a horse-drawn carriage and more.

This year’s parade will travel down Ali‘i Drive through Historic Kailua Village beginning at 9 a.m. After the parade, join the fun at Hulihe‘e Palace, where a Hawaiian music and crafts festival (ho‘olaule‘a) will take place until 4 p.m. Live performances by Hawaiian recording artists, hula halau and more. Bid on fantastic silent auction items.

After the parade, enjoy a ho‘olaule‘a (music and art festival) at Hulihe‘e Palace, including a free concert featuring top Hawaiian recording artists. Then take time to visit the many shops, galleries and historic landmarks of Historic Kailua Village.
