Kahulanui at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kona ~ July 28th!
Na Hoku Award winning Kahulanui (The Big Dance) is an inspiration passed down three generations from Grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to Dad Rodgers L.L. Naipo Sr., to Grandson and Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr.
Lolena remembers stories of his Grandfather who was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band during an era when horns and drums were a part of Hawaiian music.
Throughout Hawaii in the 1920s and 1930s, one could find orchestras playing Hawaiian Swing and the house would be jumping. Kahulanui borrowed from these influences and performs classic Hawaiian songs in a syncopated style making Hawaiian Swing vibrant and alive in Hawaii today.
“Youve never heard a beat quite like this, either in Hawaii or in Harlem. Kahulanui is a ferocious blast of swinging jazz. The sun may be hot, but the music is hotter”. – The Wall Street Journal July 2, 2015

June’s Hanohano O Kona Lecture
June’s Hanohano O Kona Lecture Sponsored by an Anonymous Friend of KHS
On Wednesday, June 28 KHS’ Museum Curator Mina Elison and KHS’ Asst. Program Director Gavin Miculka will share stories and photos from “The Kona Coffee Story: Along the Mamalahoa Highway”, an exhibit at KHS’ H.N. Greenwell Store Museum that tells the rich history of coffee in Kona through the eyes of families and farmers who built the lucrative industry. With the introduction of coffee to Kona in 1828, the development of Kona’s world-famous coffee industry experienced its highs and lows. Voices of hard working coffee farmers and community leaders can be heard through personal accounts, historic photographs and artifacts featured in this exhibit, all of which tell the compelling story of the early days of Kona coffee.
This is the June portion of a community lecture series held at the West Hawai`i Civic Center every last Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:00pm, that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike.
