KAHULANUI at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kona~Sunday December 23rd!   Leave a comment

KAHULANUI at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kona~Sunday December 23rd!

Na Hoku Award winning Kahulanui (The Big Dance) is an inspiration passed down three generations from Grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to Dad Rodgers L.L. Naipo Sr., to Grandson and Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr.

Lolena remembers stories of his Grandfather who was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band during an era when horns and drums were a part of Hawaiian music.

Throughout Hawaii in the 1920s and 1930s, one could find orchestras playing Hawaiian Swing and the house would be jumping. Kahulanui borrowed from these influences and performs classic Hawaiian songs in a syncopated style making Hawaiian Swing vibrant and alive in Hawaii today.

“Youve never heard a beat quite like this, either in Hawaii or in Harlem. Kahulanui is a ferocious blast of swinging jazz. The sun may be hot, but the music is hotter”. – The Wall Street Journal July 2, 2015

Wailea Village 20th Annual Mochi Pounding ~ December 30, 2017   Leave a comment

Wailea Village 20th Annual Mochi Pounding.

20th Annual Traditional Mochi (rice cake) Pounding for New Year (More “fun stuff” about our mochi pounding) Saturday, Dec. 30th, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Akiko’s over the years has become synonymous with MOCHI POUNDING. This will be our 20th year. We started with 23 people, mostly neighbors, and now it has become a popular community and public event. This past year we had between 600-700 folks visit our wee village to participate in mochi pounding and other activities.

Come and join the fun on Saturday, Dec. 30th, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way. Everyone takes their turn at pounding the glutinous sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local style lunch for $5. New years crafts, food vendors, fortune telling, massage, I Ching readings, floral arrangements, plantation stories, Okinawan taiko drumming, Hawaiian entertainment & more. Great cultural mix of everything that makes Hawaii so special.
